IMA4: Linear Captivate Project

Performance Problem Analysis

The Americans With Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination on the basis of physical or mental disability. While the ADA was originally developed with accessibility to things like jobs, buildings, and transportation in mind, and did not explicitly address digital or web content, the accessibility of media has become increasingly important as the Internet has boomed in the decades since the ADA was originally passed. As such, it is important for content creators to develop media that is accessible to individuals with disabilities, as not doing so could exclude a segment of the audience as well as have legal repercussions.

Description

In this module, learners discover how ADA compliance began, why it is important, and how it applies to digital assets. The course, built in Captivate, begins with an introduction to the Americans With Disabilities Act, providing a foundation for learners regarding the importance of ADA compliance. The module then progresses to how creators can make their content, specifically videos and graphics, accessible to people with disabilities (e.g., visual, auditory, physical, etc.). The module ends with a short quiz to assess students’ learning.

Educational Value

This module provides easy-to-understand background on ADA compliance and how to create compliant videos and graphics. This includes discussion of how the ADA defines disabilities, different types of disabilities, providing closed captioning, transcripts, and visual descriptions for videos, using compliant video players, creating images that can be perceived by people with visual disabilities, and providing alt text for graphics and other images. Various external resources on these topics are also provided.
